# Elevator Guide Rail Lubrication

A lift car and its counterweight run their whole life against two pairs of steel guide rails. Where the car rides on sliding guide shoes, those rails need a thin, maintained oil film: too little and the gibs wear and the ride goes noisy, too much and oil finds its way down the rail into the pit. ## Sliding guide shoes need oil. Roller guides do not.

*The question that comes before any pump.*

This is the decision that comes before any pump. A car running on **sliding guide shoes** (gibs bearing directly on the machined faces of the T-section rail) depends on an oil film between gib and rail, and that film is what a guide rail lubricator maintains. A car running on **roller guides** does not: the rollers are meant to run on a clean, dry rail, and oil put there attracts dust, builds a paste on the running face and can slip the rollers.

So the first question on any lift, new or in service, is which of the two it has, and after that, what the lift manufacturer's manual says. Fitting lubricators to a roller-guided car is not a small over-specification; it makes the ride worse. Everything below assumes sliding guide shoes, or the auxiliary points that need lubrication on either type of machine.

## What gets lubricated on a lift

Fewer points than an escalator, and spread across a moving car rather than a fixed truss, which is what shapes how the oil gets to them.

*Points 1–4*

### Car guide shoes

Two shoes at the top of the car frame and two at the bottom, each riding a rail face. The lubricator sits above the shoe with a felt wick or pad against the rail, laying down the film the gib then runs on. These are the points that decide ride quality and gib life.

*Points 5–8*

### Counterweight guide shoes

The same arrangement on the counterweight frame, on its own pair of rails. Less visible, and for that reason the set most often found dry on an inspection: nobody rides the counterweight, so a dry rail there reports itself late.

*Door gear*

### Car and landing door mechanisms

Door operator gear, hanger rollers and door tracks: light-duty points that take a small grease or oil charge rather than a maintained film. Door faults are a large share of lift callouts, and dry hanger rollers are one of the causes.

*Auxiliary*

### Sheave bearings, governor & overspeed gear

Diverter and deflector sheave bearings, governor pivots and safety gear linkages, where the manual calls for periodic grease. Small quantities, long intervals, but on a schedule, which is exactly what gets skipped when it means a separate trip with a grease gun.

## How the oil reaches the rail

The lubricator itself is the same either way: a reservoir with a felt wick or pad held against the rail face, mounted above each guide shoe. What differs is how that reservoir gets refilled, and that is where most of the maintenance cost sits.

*Conventional*

### Refilled by hand

Each of the eight lubricators is topped up individually on the maintenance round, with the car moved to reach the top and bottom sets and the counterweight rails reached separately. Simple, and it works, as long as every round happens and every reservoir is actually checked. *Metered*

### Fed from one pump

A small motor-driven pump on the car frame feeds all four car lubricators through metering distributors, on a timer or on a car-run signal, so the eight-point round becomes one reservoir to watch. A level indicator reports when that reservoir is low. This is the arrangement worth specifying on high-rise and high-traffic machines, where the round is long and the consequences of missing it are expensive.

The system meters whatever guide rail oil the lift manufacturer's manual specifies: it is a metering system, not an oil. Pumps are available with 12/24 V DC, 110/220 V AC and 415 V 3-phase supplies.

## Too much oil is a fault in its own right

A dry rail is the failure everyone looks for. The opposite one is at least as common on lifts and rather harder to undo: oil applied faster than the gib carries it away runs down the rail, down the full travel of the shaft, and collects in the pit, where it mixes with shaft dust into a deposit someone has to clean, and where it sits as a fire load at the bottom of an enclosed shaft.

Worse, oil migrating off the rail can reach places that depend on friction: governor rope grip and brake surfaces are safety-critical and are meant to stay dry. That is the real argument for metering rather than a generous top-up: a resist or volumetric distributor delivers a set quantity and then stops, so the wick gets a film's worth and no more, every cycle, whoever is on the round that month.

## Elevator lubrication, answered

### Do elevator guide rails need lubrication?

Only where the car and counterweight run on sliding guide shoes. Those depend on an oil film between the gib and the machined rail face, maintained by a lubricator above each shoe. Cars on roller guides run on clean, dry rails and should not be oiled.

### How do I tell sliding guide shoes from roller guides?

Look at the top of the car frame. A sliding shoe is a bracket holding a replaceable gib that wraps the rail and contacts it directly, usually with a small oil reservoir and wick above it. Roller guides carry three rubber-tyred rollers per assembly, running on the rail faces with no wick and no reservoir.

### How many lubrication points does a lift have?

Eight for the guide shoes on a typical machine (four on the car frame, four on the counterweight) plus door gear, sheave bearings and governor points that take a periodic grease charge rather than a maintained film. The exact count follows the lift manufacturer's maintenance schedule.

### Which oil goes on lift guide rails?

### What happens if guide rails are over-lubricated?

Oil runs down the rail over the full travel and collects in the pit, where it holds shaft dust and adds a fire load. It can also migrate to surfaces that are meant to stay dry, including governor rope grip and brake surfaces. Metering the dose is what prevents it.

### Can guide shoe lubricators be fed automatically?

Yes. A small pump on the car frame feeds the four car lubricators through metering distributors, on a timer or a car-run signal, so one reservoir replaces eight individual top-ups. A level indicator reports a low reservoir instead of leaving it to the next round.
