What to note down before asking for an automatic lubrication system for an escalator or travelator already in service. Twenty minutes at the machine, with the manufacturer's manual open, is enough to get a pump, distributor and nozzle package specified first time rather than after three rounds of questions. Print it, tick it off, and send us what you have.

*At the machine*

## Seven things to record

None of it needs the machine opened up beyond the truss and the machine room. Where you do not know an answer, say so: a blank is more useful to us than a guess.

*1*

### The machine

- **Make, model and nameplate code.** Copy it as printed; photograph the plate as well.

- **Escalator or travelator.** A travelator or moving walkway has pallet chains where an escalator has step chains.

- **Site and duty.** Metro station, airport, mall or other, and how many hours a day it runs.

*2*

### The oil points

- **Step chains.** Two, one each side. Note where the return run is accessible.

- **Main drive chain.** One, in the machine room.

- **Handrail drive chains.** One each side, near the handrail sheaves.

- **Auxiliary points.** Bearings and tension carriage pins, where fitted.

- **Total count.** A typical machine has between 8 and 20 oil points.

*3*

### The chains

- **Chain pitch and speed.** From the manual, or measured. The dose per outlet is worked out from these.

- **Length of the truss.** It decides tube lengths and where the distributors sit.

- **Last elongation reading.** If an inspection measured one, note the figure and the date.

*4*

### How it is lubricated now

- **Method and interval.** Hand oiling on a round, an existing pump, or nothing in particular.

- **The oil specified.** The grade the manufacturer's manual calls for. The system meters that oil; it does not change it.

- **The schedule in the manual.** Photograph the page if there is a dose or interval given.

*5*

### Power and control

- **Supply near the pump position.** 12 or 24 V DC, 110 or 220 V AC, or 415 V 3-phase.

- **Timer or controller.** The pump can run from its built-in timer, or be cycled from the escalator controller so it only runs while the machine moves. Note whether a controller signal is available.

- **Space for the pump.** A 2 L or 4 L reservoir in the machine room or upper truss.

*6*

### What you are seeing

- **Noise.** From the chains, and from which run.

- **Oil where it should not be.** In the pit, on the truss floor or on the steps.

- **Dry, bright pins.** Visible on the return run.

- **Site conditions.** Dust, humidity, anything unusual in the truss.

*7*

### What to send us

- **Photographs.** Nameplate, the step chain return run, the main drive chain and any existing lubrication points.

- **The manual page** with the lubrication schedule and specified oil.

- **A drawing,** if you have one for the machine room or truss.

- **Quantity.** One machine or a fleet, and any deadline such as a shutdown window.

*What we do with it*

## From the checklist to a quote

The answers decide four things. The oil points set how many distributor outlets the network needs. Chain pitch, chain speed, running hours and dust set the dose each outlet delivers, against whatever range the manufacturer's manual gives. The supply and the controller signal decide whether the pump runs from its own timer or is cycled by the machine. The truss length and the photographs decide tube routing and where the pump, reservoir and nozzles can sit.

What comes back is a pump, distributor and alarm package with the dose and cycle worked out for your machine, not a catalogue page. The reasoning behind each circuit is on the [escalator lubrication system](https://herglube.in/applications/escalator-lubrication-system/) page, and the [troubleshooting guide](https://herglube.in/troubleshooting/) covers commissioning once it is fitted.

Building escalators rather than maintaining them? The [OEM enquiry](https://herglube.in/contact/?intent=oem) asks for the same facts about a machine you are designing, plus a drawing.

## Got the answers? Send them over.

Paste what you have into the retrofit enquiry and attach the photographs. Partial answers are fine: we will ask for whatever is missing.
