The oil level indicator is fitted to the side of the lubrication pump's reservoir and gives a direct visual reading of how much lubricant remains, without needing to open the tank. A quick glance during a routine walk-round is enough to see when a top-up is due, which matters on a centralised system where the pump itself is often out of sight or awkward to reach.
Running a pump dry, even briefly, risks air entering the lubricant circuit and starving the lube points it feeds. On pumps that also carry a low-level switch, the level indicator gives operators the same information the switch is using to trigger its alarm, so a fault can be confirmed by eye before the equipment is shut down for topping up.
